Water-Based Adhesive is the Winner!

Those of us at LD Davis are individuals of many talents! Sure, we can manufacture quality animal glue products, and make 3,000 on-site customer visits each year…but did you know we have a resident photographer on our staff?

Greg Brown, our Technical Service Manager, is also an accomplished photographer.  He makes our clients’ lives much easier by sending them photos with explanations when we are working on their products in our lab, he send staff funny photos from the day’s work, and, most recently, he won second place in Chemistry and Engineering News Magazine’s “Beauty at the Lab Bench” photo contest.  Click here for the photo!

Customizable Adhesives

Greg snapped the winning photo one day while mixing pigment into white, water-based liquid adhesive.  All of our adhesives, animal glues and water-base liquid glues, are easily customizable for a number of variables, but the water-based liquid adhesives are also customizable for color.  Red, blue, green, black, whatever colors your heart desires we can mix into our liquid glues for you.

Liquid, Water-Based Adhesives

LD Davis liquid water-based adhesives are used in a number of applications including laminating, packaging, case and carton seal, woodworking, paper bonding, and other assembly applications.  They are sometimes called “cold adhesives” because unlike animal glues or hot melt adhesives, they can be applied at room temperature.  Since they have no risk of burns and they are also completely non-toxic, our liquid water-based adhesives are always safe to handle!

To take the winning photo (on his blackberry!) Greg stopped the agitation process that was mixing pigment into the liquid glue for just a moment to capture this awesome photo.  He won second place, and the first and third place photos were both taken with electron microscopes!  We are very proud!

Green Adhesive for St. Patty’s Day

We are at LD Davis…although we’ve pretty much been thinking green since day one.

Green and Eco-Friendly Animal Glue

The line of animal glues and liquid water based adhesives that we manufacture are totally non-toxic, eco friendly, biodegradable and recyclable. Our animal glue line consists of hundreds of variations of our protein adhesive, which is also called hide glue.  These variations of our animal glue formula are used in the bookbinding, box making, and packaging industries, to name a few.  Our “green” adhesives make companies able to make more sustainable choices during product production, as our adhesive is completely recyclable.

Sourcing Gelatin

Not only is usage of hard and soft gelatin scrap in adhesive manufacturing an interesting concept, it is quite beneficial to the environment in a number of ways.

By recycling scrap gelatin material from pharmaceutical and nutritional companies, we are reducing a large waste stream that they would otherwise dispose of.  We purchase their scrap gelatin material instead of having them throw it away with the rest of their waste.

After we obtain the hard gelatin and soft gelatin, we clean it, grind it, and inspect if for quality before utilizing it in our animal glue manufacturing process.  Scrap gelatin material is a major source of one of our most important raw materials for animal glue, which in addition to gelatin is composed of water, glycerin, corn sugar and Epsom salt.

We purchase more scrap gelatin material than any other company in the United States.  We always want to make sure that we can produce the adhesives that our customers need to manufacture their products.

LD Davis is constantly sourcing gelatin and is always open to testing samples from new sources of hard gelatin and soft gel netting from around the country and around the globe.  We will continue to find new sources of gelatin to manufacture our animal glue to keep our customers happy for years to come!

Liquid Water Based Adhesives

L.D. Davis manufactures a varied line of liquid water-based adhesives that are useful in a wide variety of applications.  Liquid water-based adhesives are totally eco-friendly, non-toxic, and safe to handle.  These factors make water-based adhesives ideal for use in food packaging applications.

Water-Based Adhesive in Packaging Applications

Food packaging must not compromise or contaminate the food contents in any way.  The substrate material, ink, and adhesive must have a miniscule to no effect on the food.  All packaging materials must be safe to come into contact with the food, and our water-based adhesives are, because they’re totally non-toxic.
The water-based adhesives that L.D. Davis manufactures for food packaging are water-soluble, water-based and non-toxic.  Both liquid, water-based adhesive and animal glue biodegrade quickly when introduced to the natural environment and, in food packaging, present no threat of contaminating the food inside the package.

In good food package manufacturing the food should never come into contact with the side of the package that has ink printed on it.  If packaging labels are stacked on top of each other or on a roll, small, invisible ink particles may attach to the non-printed side of the packaging and come into contact with the food.  Packaging adhesives should also generally not come into contact with the food, but L.D. Davis water-based adhesives and animal glues are non-toxic, so they will not contaminate the food if they do come into contact.

Eco-Friendly Water Based Adhesives

Davis animal glues, which are water-based adhesives, are made from the same gelatin used to make gel caps and other pills by pharmaceutical and nutritional companies.  Pharmaceutical-grade gelatin is used in these types of pills, while food-grade gelatin is used in popular candy like gummy bears and snacks like Jell-O.
