Packaging Adhesive
There are three types of adhesives for packaging; Water Based, Hot Melt and Protein Adhesives. Water based adhesives use water as the carrier fluid, with the adhesive particles suspended in water, reducing the adhesive’s viscosity so that it can be applied to various substrates at varying thicknesses. When hot melt adhesive is heated it becomes liquid. When it cools it becomes a solid again and forms a bond. Protein adhesives are similar to liquid resins in that they are water based, but dissimilar because they are applied at elevated temperature.
Physical Properties of Packaging Adhesives
- Water based resins are liquid
- Hot melts are solid
- Animal protein is in either cake or dry form
The Major Advantages of Packaging Adhesives
- Formaldehyde-free
- Clean running
- Light in color
