Cheers: Labeling Glue for Beer Bottles

Posted on April 13th, 2016 by Maria Verros

Beer Bottle LabelWhen you reach for an ice cold beer on a hot summer day, chances are you’re not thinking about the glue that holds the label in place. But, to be perfectly honest, a lot goes into picking the right labeling glue for beer bottles. Not only does the glue have to withstand ice cold refrigerator temperatures, it also has to hold up when submerged in water at the bottom of an icy cooler. If the right glue isn’t used during the labeling process, you’ll open a cooler full of naked bottles and floating labels.

If you are using a Krones Cold-glue Labeller for your beer bottle labeling, our HB Fuller product Swift®tak PWL5120 is a great match for you. This is an opaque, synthetic polymer based glue for use on a wide range of rotary labellers. The key: it adheres to cold, wet bottles and offers ice-proof bonds. Perfect for beer bottles!

Keeping Glue Safe from Winter Freezing

Posted on October 22nd, 2015 by Maria Verros

Many of our customers are already experiencing winter temperatures. As the colder months approach, we want to make sure that your liquid glue stays safe from winter freezing.

L.D. Davis takes a number of steps in order to prevent your liquid glue from freezing during transit. The most important step is that we only ship our liquid adhesive products in the beginning of the week during cold months. This ensures that your liquid adhesive arrives to you in a timely manner without sitting over night somewhere in a cold warehouse over a weekend.

Why does glue freeze? How can you keep your glue in the best working condition? Check out our latest infographic:

Adhesives in the Winter Time

Posted on December 11th, 2012 by Maria Verros

Brrr, it is getting cold out!

As the winter months approach, the cold weather can often be problematic for gluing applications. As a result of the cold, dry weather, poor adhesive application can occur when the adhesive’s specific temperature falls below the recommended minimum.

It is important to keep in mind that liquid adhesives are very sensitive to the cold weather. Since water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, your liquid adhesive, which is a water-based glue, will also freeze. L.D. Davis takes a number of steps in order to prevent your liquid glue from freezing during transit, the most important being that we only ship our liquid adhesive products in the beginning of the week during cold months. This ensures your liquid adhesive arrives to you in a timely manner without sitting over night somewhere in a cold warehouse.

How can you tell if your liquid adhesive has frozen?

It is important to do a thorough inspection upon receipt of your liquid adhesive. If the glue has any type of crystallization on it or has a lumpy consistency, the glue is mostly likely frozen and unfortunately not useable. Another good indicator is the temperature of the casing. If the box is freezing, there is a good chance your liquid adhesive froze during transit.

Please keep in mind that not only do the liquid adhesives need to be kept in an area above their minimum temperature, but also it is essential to keep your substrates in an area that also maintains the required temperatures of the adhesives for the best adhesion properties.

For any questions or comments on adhesives in the wintertime be sure to call 1-800-883-6199. If you believe your liquid glue has frozen, call our lab at 1-800-553-3284 right away. It’s our job to ensure your liquid adhesive arrives to you on time and in excellent condition!

Posted on May 7th, 2012 by Maria Verros

Eco-Friendly Adhesive Products

L.D. Davis Industries manufactures a wide variety of protein-based glues and liquid water-based glues, which are all eco-friendly, completely non-toxic and easily recyclable. Today, we’d like to feature our eco-friendly liquid water-based adhesive products, also called “white glues.”

Eco-Friendly Liquid Glues

Liquid water-based glues are based on polymer emulsions that are modified with various raw materials to produce different kinds of liquid glues. These adhesives are easily customizable for tack, adhesion, open time, viscosity, and even color.

L.D. Davis eco friendly liquid glues come in many different sized containers. Customers can purchase totes, drums, and even convenient five-gallon pails. Five-gallon pails of liquid glue are convenient to handle, ship, and use and are great for companies that do not have the equipment setup to handle large drums or totes.

Liquid Glue Facts

Eco-friendly liquid glues can be applied at room temperature, unlike hot melt adhesives and protein adhesives. This fact in addition to their non-toxicity makes them extremely safe to handle.

Liquid glues are used in a wide variety of applications and are commonly seen in case and carton seal, packaging, woodworking, lamination, envelopes and other assembly work. They are very easy to apply through a variety of different methods and they also dry clear on the substrates.

L.D. Davis Industries strives to provide many different companies with safe, effective, and eco-friendly adhesives. Check out our website for our entire product line of environmentally friendly protein adhesives and liquid glues.

Liquid Water Based Adhesives

Posted on March 5th, 2012 by Maria Verros

L.D. Davis manufactures a varied line of liquid water-based adhesives that are useful in a wide variety of applications. Liquid water-based adhesives are totally eco-friendly, non-toxic, and safe to handle. These factors make water-based adhesives ideal for use in food packaging applications.

Water-Based Adhesive in Packaging Applications

Food packaging must not compromise or contaminate the food contents in any way. The substrate material, ink, and adhesive must have a miniscule to no effect on the food. All packaging materials must be safe to come into contact with the food, and our water-based adhesives are, because they’re totally non-toxic.
The water-based adhesives that L.D. Davis manufactures for food packaging are water-soluble, water-based and non-toxic. Both liquid, water-based adhesive and animal glue biodegrade quickly when introduced to the natural environment and, in food packaging, present no threat of contaminating the food inside the package.

In good food package manufacturing the food should never come into contact with the side of the package that has ink printed on it. If packaging labels are stacked on top of each other or on a roll, small, invisible ink particles may attach to the non-printed side of the packaging and come into contact with the food. Packaging adhesives should also generally not come into contact with the food, but L.D. Davis water-based adhesives and animal glues are non-toxic, so they will not contaminate the food if they do come into contact.

Eco-Friendly Water Based Adhesives

L.D. Davis animal glues, which are water-based adhesives, are made from the same gelatin used to make gel caps and other pills by pharmaceutical and nutritional companies. Pharmaceutical-grade gelatin is used in these types of pills, while food-grade gelatin is used in popular candy like gummy bears and snacks like Jell-O.

L.D. Davis is North America’s premier and largest protein adhesive compounder. Our water-based adhesives are totally non-toxic and environmentally friendly. We provide the food packaging industry with our Green Advantage, which comes from a long history of manufacturing green, non-toxic, water-based adhesives. While the food packaging industry delves into safety regulations for terms of inks and substrates, they can rest assured that L.D. Davis packaging adhesives will certainly not contaminate the food inside the package. Our water-based adhesives are an asset to the food packaging industry because they are non-toxic, and safe for the environment.

A Collection of LD Davis’ Eco-Friendly Work

Posted on March 1st, 2012 by Maria Verros

LD Davis Green Advantage

LD Davis has been manufacturing eco-friendly adhesives for over eight decades. All of the adhesive products we manufacture are completely non-toxic, recyclable, and biodegradable. We like to do our part to help the environment. In fact, we like to call it the LD Davis Green Advantage:

Animal Glue

Eco-Friendly Adhesive Manufacturing

“The components of protein-based gelatin adhesive include gelatin proteins, usually extracted from edible gelatin which is composed of pharmaceutical scraps of both hard cap and soft gel pill capsules or hides and bones of pigs and cattle. Animal glue production is a green process not only because it recycles nutritional scrap, but it is also made up of Epsom salts, water, sugar, and glycerin, which are all water-soluble components. The sugars used in protein adhesive generally come from corn, which is a renewable resource. The combination of these different components produces a green, effective, and biodegradable adhesive that is useful for a wide variety of different applications including:

  • Bookbinding,
  • Rigid boxes,
  • Food packaging,
  • Board games,
  • Bird feeders.”

Adhesive and Packaging Sustainability

LD Davis adhesives are used in a wide variety of industries, one of which is the packaging industry. Packaging companies and the industry as a whole are transitioning to greener and more sustainable packaging practices. Our environmentally friendly adhesives can play a large part in the sustainability rating of a product’s packaging:

Packaging Adhesives

Packaging Adhesives

“According to a recent article in “Food and Beverage Packaging,” the packaging industry as a whole is farther ahead of the adhesives industry in terms of environmental matters. However, it brings up an important point about the role adhesives play in packaging sustainability.

A main point of the article is that packaging could be more sustainable if adhesives were considered earlier in the manufacturing process and not as an afterthought. “An oft- heard phrase is ‘adhesives are the last thing considered when designing a package and are used in such small per-package quantities that they are often ignored.’ This position is changing. The new awareness is being driven by the same drivers that affect packaging overall.” Adhesives make up such a small part of a package that they are often left until the end of the design and manufacturing process and little thought is put into their impact on the environment.”

Recycling Gelatin Waste

In addition to manufacturing quality animal glue and liquid glue that is recyclable and sustainable, LD Davis reduces a large waste stream from pharmaceutical and nutritional companies by recycling their scrap hard gelatin and soft gelatin for use in our adhesive products:

“One of the components of the L.D. Davis Green Advantage is the company’s recycling of pharmaceutical waste. The gelatin we use is what’s left over in a sheet of gelatin after a soft gel capsule, like a Vitamin E capsule, has been manufactured. We also recycle scrap hard capsule gelatin. Both the hard cap and soft gel netting are ground and cleaned before use in our adhesive, which is non-toxic and biodegradable.

L.D. Davis purchases this scrap material from pharmaceutical and nutritional companies, and then formulates many protein adhesive products that are widely used every day. We are the largest purchaser of recycled pharmaceutical gelatin in the United States. We go through a lot of scrap gelatin. We help reduce pharmaceutical companies’ waste stream by utilizing their waste gelatin, and they help us by providing us with the necessary materials we need to manufacture our gelatin adhesives. Everybody wins!”

LD Davis produces sustainable adhesives in a number of ways. For more information, please visit our website, leave a comment on this blog, or communicate with us via Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Google+.

Happy Valentine’s Day from LD Davis

Posted on February 13th, 2012 by Maria Verros

It’s Valentine’s Day…. what do you love?

(Well, tomorrow is at least!)

At LD Davis, we love manufacturing and distributing a wide variety of animal glue, liquid glue, and hide glue to our valued customers. Our adhesives are used in a wide variety of applications such as book binding, packaging, box making, and more!

It might seem cheesy, but we really do love glue manufacturing and our customers. LD Davis’s mission statement is “building life long bonds.” We strive to meet this goal every day with our vendors, customers, and employees.

We have extremely solid, long-standing relationships with our vendors and raw materials suppliers. LD Davis also has an AAA credit rating, which means our suppliers always get paid on time-making sure you can get your animal glue on time as well. Raw materials for animal glue/hide glue include:

  • Water
  • Gelatin
  • Glycerin
  • Sugars
  • Epsom salts

We always ensure that we have the materials we need in house to manufacture enough animal glue so that our customers can get the adhesive they need from us, when they need it. We go to great lengths to meet customer deadlines, even in extreme situations. Click here to read a blog about how we recently went above and beyond to help out a customer in need.

We value our customers more than anything and know that the relationships we have developed with them enable us to have customers that purchase animal glue from LD Davis year, after year, after year.

Without our dedicated staff to manufacture the animal glue, sell the animal glue, and control the company’s finances and marketing, we couldn’t provide the quality adhesive and service our customers have become accustomed to. We have many staff members that have been with the company for ten, fifteen, even twenty years! That really says something about the team spirit and the love that LD Davis employees have for the great company we work for.

It’s Valentines Day…Spread a little love around!

Groundhog Day!

Posted on February 2nd, 2012 by Maria Verros

It’s Groundhog Day!

Reports say that good old Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter….we’ll see!

We’ve all seen the Bill Murray movie where he wakes up on the same day over and over again, on Groundhog Day. Sometimes we can all feel like that.

LD Davis has done an amazing job of incorporating variety into the company over the past 85 years of adhesive manufacturing. We of course have our staple products that we will constantly manufacture for many years to come: animal glue, hide glue, and liquid glue. All of these adhesive products are eco-friendly, non-toxic, and totally biodegradable. Eco-friendly animal glue always has been and will continue to be a staple of LD Davis Industries as long as we are around!

An animal glue manufacturing company doesn’t stick around for 85 successful years by accident. Besides continuing to manufacture our solid, steady animal glue products, our adhesive lab is always ready and willing to create a custom animal glue formulation for a new or difficult application. All of our animal glues and liquid glues are customizable for a number of different properties.

In addition, LD Davis is the major animal glue supplier for the bookbinding, packaging, and graphic arts industries in North America. However, we will never sell ourselves short and only serve those industries. We are constantly looking for and working with new industries that can use our existing animal glue products and formulations or maybe even use our products and materials in a new way. We love a challenge and love working to find new uses for our animal glue and its raw materials.

In addition to the animal glue and liquid glue products we manufacture, LD Davis distributes hot melt adhesives, fugitive glue, and PUR glues from other respected chemical companies such as HB Fuller and Ashland Chemical. We want to be able to provide the best possible product for our customers, and to do so we also want to provide a very large variety of adhesive products.

We hope your Groundhog Day is going better than Bill Murray’s, and encourage you to contact us for anything adhesive. Please leave a comment or communicate with us via Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and Google+

Customer Service

Posted on January 30th, 2012 by Maria Verros

We pride ourselves on excellent customer service at LD Davis. A large part of our competitive advantage, aside from manufacturing quality animal hide glue for over 85 years, is the fact that our salesmen make over 3,000 on-site, in-person visits to our customers each and every year. This personal, face-to-face attention shows our clients how much we really care about their adhesive application.

The following is a quick thank-you note one of our salesmen, Jeff Palmiter, received from a client of his that works at a large packaging company:

Just a short note to express our appreciation for the effort you made to take care of our glue shortfall. Meeting our driver midway made a big difference in the timely delivery of the needed glue back to our facility as well as taking my call late last evening to discuss the possible scenarios to get the glue to Roanoke.

You displayed another example of a way L.D. Davis is above all the others.

Look forward to seeing you next week when we will conduct the glue tests.

Thanks again,

At LD Davis, we will do everything in our power to ensure that our customers get the animal hide glue that they need, when they need it. The above communication came after Kurt discovered an unexpected shortage of their animal hide glue right before a big project. His salesman, Jeff Palmiter, went above and beyond to get him the animal hide glue that he needed to do his job correctly.

Clients cannot go wrong with LD Davis’ customer service or quality adhesive products. We have been manufacturing excellent animal hide glue and liquid glue, both eco-adhesives which are totally non-toxic and biodegradable for many decades. We also distribute hot melt adhesives, PUR glue and fugitive glue from respected companies around the country. We are here for your adhesive needs, no matter what.

Packaging Adhesive and Higher Sustainability Standards

Posted on January 12th, 2012 by Maria Verros

Companies are rethinking their sustainability initiatives to include adhesives and packaging.

In the past, adhesives were left as an afterthought when it came to packaging and sustainability, since they make up such a small percentage of the actual packaging.  Adhesives are incredibly important in packaging, not only because they hold things together, but because the choice of adhesive can determine whether a package is actually recyclable or not.  If the adhesive cannot be recycled, neither can the packaging.

An article from Packaging Digest’s Newsletter, “Sprint calls for higher packaging sustainability,” touches on this aspect of adhesives in packaging.  Sprint/Nextel is working to put in higher sustainability standards for both their phones and for their packaging.  When it comes to more sustainable packaging, their standards are:

  • “The elimination of plastic laminate”
  • “Use of vegetable-based or low VOC (violate organic compound) inks”
  • “Use of water-based or other environmentally-friendly adhesives.”

LD Davis can help with the last packaging standard.

The adhesives we manufacture, animal glue and liquid glue, are an excellent choice for sustainable packaging.  They are safe to use and form strong, long-lasting bonds, but are also totally eco-friendly.  Benefits to using L.D. Davis packaging adhesives include:

  • Safe for the environment
  • Safe to use
  • Water soluble
  • Non-toxic
  • Biodegradable
  • Recyclable.
Packaging Adhesives

LD Davis Packaging Adhesives

Adhesives need to be in the forefront of the sustainable packaging decision-making process.  If adhesives are a part of the early planning stages of a sustainable package, the company will have a much smoother ride from concept to production.  L.D. Davis packaging adhesives are a great choice for green packaging because they are safe, non-toxic, and totally recyclable.
